In the 64 years since the first Kennedy-Nixon televised faceoff in 1960 brought the presidential debate stage into Americans' living rooms as never before, they've become a cornerstone ritual of the election cycle. Aaron Kall, director of debate for the University of Michigan's Debate Program, told ABC News the majority of those who tune in are likely already locked into a preferred candidate. With the last two presidential elections decided by just tens of thousands of votes in a few states -- many cast by independent voters -- candidates' debate strategies have become laser-focused on courting that group, according to Julien Labarre, administrator of the University of California Santa Barbara's Center of Information Technology & Society.

Assange lands in native Australia after pleading guilty in US court
Julian Assange arrived on Wednesday in his native Australia, with the WikiLeaks founder stepping off the plane in Canberra and hugging his wife, Stella. "After enduring nearly 14 years of arbitrary detention in the UK, 5 years in maximum security prison, for his groundbreaking publishing work with WikiLeaks, Julian Assange has arrived home on Australian soil." Assange had pleaded guilty to a single felony in a U.S. court in the Northern Mariana Islands on Wednesday and left a free man.

When President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump square off on Thursday, they will especially be looking to appeal to undecided or independent voters – but many who spoke with ABC News are not looking forward to the rematch. While the CNN debate marks the first real showdown between the two candidates in 2024, they debated before in 2020. Thalia Flores from Nashua, New Hampshire, said she voted for former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley in the GOP primary and is now leaning toward casting her vote for Biden, but said she wishes there would be other candidates on the debate stage.

President Biden to pardon veterans convicted under regulation used to keep LGBT members from serving
President Joe Biden announced Tuesday that he will pardon U.S. veterans who were convicted by the military under a regulation that allowed people to be kicked out for being gay. The White House says the move will impact thousands of military veterans, though officials declined to give a specific number. "Today, I am righting an historic wrong by using my clemency authority to pardon many former service members who were convicted simply for being themselves," Biden said in a statement.

Biden administration's asylum executive action decreased encounters by 40%: DHS
President Joe Biden's executive action on asylum, which was rolled out three weeks ago, has decreased encounters along the border by 40%, the Biden administration said. The executive action established a rule to turn away migrants who are claiming asylum between ports of entry after there have been seven consecutive days of more than 2,500 encounters along the southern border. The restrictions on asylum claims would remain in place for an additional 14 days once daily encounters at the border fall to a seven-day average of 1,500 or less.

The trial of Evan Gershkovich, an American journalist charged with espionage in Russia, began on Wednesday behind closed doors, as U.S. officials accused the Kremlin of using the case "to achieve its political objectives." Julian Assange pleaded guilty to a felony at a United States federal courthouse in the Northern Mariana Islands on Wednesday and walked out of court a free man. The Justice Department had reached an agreement for Assange to plead guilty to a single felony count of conspiring to unlawfully obtain and disseminate classified information. The judge in the case sentenced Assange to time served.

NY16 Democratic primary: Jamaal Bowman defeated in most expensive House primary on record, in blow for progressives
The Associated Press has projected that Westchester County Executive George Latimer will defeat incumbent Rep. Jamaal Bowman in a contentious Democratic primary in New York’s 16th Congressional district. As of 9:38 PM, with 51% of the votes counted, Latimer leads Bowman with 54.8% of the vote. Bowman has 45.2%.

American woman goes missing while attending yoga retreat in the Bahamas
An American who traveled to the Bahamas to attend a yoga retreat has been missing for nearly a week, her family and police said. Taylor Casey, 41, of Chicago, was last seen on June 19 in the area of Paradise Island, according to the Royal Bahamas Police Force. The search for Casey continued on Tuesday, with authorities searching by ground and with drones, the police force told ABC News.

Minnesota's Rapidan Dam at risk of 'failure' amid severe flooding
As southern Minnesota battles an onslaught of rain and severe flooding, the fate of the RapidanDam hangs in the balance, with officials saying the dam is in "imminent failure condition." The Rapidan Dam, built in 1910, is located on the Blue Earth River, which begins in Iowa and runs outside Mankato, Minnesota, about 85 miles southwest of Minneapolis. The Blue Earth County Sheriff's Office reported the dam was in precarious standing amid the overflow of the river, which has caused "erosion and slope-cutting" to the dam as well as a buildup of debris in the area.

26-year-old woman drowns after slipping into creek at Glacier National Park
The woman slipped on slick rocks and fell into Virginia Creek between St. Mary Falls and Virginia Falls at Glacier National Park late Sunday afternoon, according to the National Park Service (NPS). The agency identified the woman on Tuesday as Gillian Tones from North Apollo, Pennsylvania. NPS initially reported that Tones was swept over St. Mary's Falls, though said in an update Tuesday that witnesses later clarified that she slipped and fell into the creek.

US military delivers supplies to Gaza via pier, but there's no one to distribute them
U.S. officials are defending President Joe Biden's decision to build a $230 million temporary pier off Gaza to deliver humanitarian aid as a better-than-nothing solution to the worsening crisis there, even as rough waves have forced its closure several times in the past month and aid workers on shore say it's nearly impossible to distribute the supplies due to safety concerns. The amount is roughly equivalent to what the U.N. says can fit inside 200 to 600 of its ground trucks -- less than half of what aid organizations say Gaza's 2 million residents might need in a day. Biden's decision to build the pier came amid frustration with the Israelis that they were allowing too few aid trucks inside Gaza, citing security concerns.

Special counsel criticizes Trump for storing national secrets amid 'cluttered collection of keepsakes'
In an overnight court filing in Donald Trump's classified documents case, special counsel Jack Smith defended the August 2022 search of the former president's Mar-a-Lago estate, following Trump's lawyers' request to dismiss the case on the basis that some of the documents were shuffled around during the search. The filing, which came before the judge overseeing the case, Aileen Cannon, heard arguments Tuesday on defense requests to have the case dismissed, provides perhaps the most detailed account of the search and the state of Trump's boxes that were seized by the FBI -- including never-before-seen photos of some of the boxes to illustrate how Trump stored his materials. "Trump personally chose to keep documents containing some of the nation’s most highly guarded secrets in cardboard boxes along with a collection of other personally chosen keepsakes of various sizes and shapes from his presidency -- newspapers, thank-you notes, Christmas ornaments, magazines, clothing, and photographs of himself and others," the filing says.

In two court rulings Monday night, federal judges in Kansas and Missouri halted key aspects of President Joe Biden's hallmark student loan repayment program. The SAVE plan, a student loan repayment plan that ties how much someone pays each month to what their income is, has been in place for almost a year and is the jewel of Biden's surviving student loan efforts -- one that he has touted heavily in his reelection campaign. The rulings will stop the Biden administration from any further implementation of the program for now, including a plan to slash payments next month and to continue granting debt relief to certain enrollees.
