De La Rosa, who previously spent parts of seven seasons in the majors from 2011 through 2017, joined the Dodgers on a minor-league deal in February following a four-year run overseas with the Yomiuri Giants of Nippon Professional Baseball. After failing to win a spot in the Dodgers' Opening Day bullpen, De La Rosa never joined an affiliate before he was cut loose.

De La Rosa has spent the last four seasons with the Yomiuri Giants in Japan, and posted a 2.53 ERA with 33 saves over his 137 appearances in the NPB. De La Rosa is pitching again after missing 18 months due to Tommy John elbow surgery -- the second time he's undergone that procedure. He's had a pair of scoreless outings this spring, including one in an appearance against the Reds on Monday, when he flashed a high-90s fastball while striking out the side. By having De La Rosa start at Reno, the organization can easily limit the length and frequency of his appearances. Once the right-hander is eased into the season, De La Rosa can rejoin the Diamondbacks' bullpen, where he's shown flashes of being a dominant late-inning weapon.

With rain falling Friday in Colorado Springs, Reno's game Friday was called following the top of the eighth inning, which may have explained why the left-hander went unused. There's been no indication that De La Rosa experienced any sort of setback with his shoulder, so the expectation is that he'll pitch for Reno at some point this weekend before potentially returning from the disabled list thereafter.

After dominating in his first three appearances of the season with the big club, De La Rosa ran into some turbulence Thursday that cost the Diamondbacks a series win. After retiring the first two batters of the seventh inning with the Diamondbacks holding a one-run lead, De La Rosa surrendered a double, issued an intentional walk and then served up a three-run homer to Randal Grichuk that proved to be the decisive blow. One poor performance won't prompt manager Torey Lovullo to shy away from using De La Rosa in future high-leverage scenarios, but the loss will nonetheless delay the right-hander's potential move up the bullpen depth chart.

De La Rosa's start to the season was delayed until May while he recovered from stem-cell treatments to address a UCL sprain, but he looks plenty healthy now. After having mostly served as a starter in his last two seasons with the Diamondbacks, De La Rosa will now work exclusively in relief, a role he could thrive in thanks to his premium velocity. He's already ridden his upper-90s fastball to five strikeouts in three appearances with the Diamondbacks, who added him to the 40-man roster after he posted a 23:4 K:BB in 15.1 innings at Triple-A Reno. If De La Rosa can maintain that success over his subsequent games, he could end up settling into a key setup role.
