Is a D+ passing at UMD? ›

A grade of C- is assigned a value of 1.7 quality points per credit hour. D+, D, D- denotes borderline understanding of the subject and marginal performance. It does not represent satisfactory progress toward a degree.

Grade Point Average Computation

The A+ and A is calculated at 4 quality points, A- at 3.7 quality points, B+ at 3.3 quality points, B at 3 quality points, B- at 2.7 quality points, C+ at 2.3 quality points, C at 2 quality points, and C- at 1.7 quality points. The grades of D+, D, D-, F, and I receive no quality points.

Students may repeat no more than 18 credits. If a student completely withdraws from all courses during a semester, those courses are not included in this limit. Students may not repeat any given course more than twice unless provided an exception from the dean's office.

The passing cutoff point to satisfy general credit requirements is typically a D or above. Sometimes, your school may have higher grading standards to satisfy your core curriculum or major requirements.

While one C might have some impact on your GPA, it is unlikely to severely hurt your overall college admissions prospects, especially if it is an isolated incident.

The average GPA at University of Maryland is 4. This makes University of Maryland Extremely Competitive for GPAs. (Most schools use a weighted GPA out of 4.0, though some report an unweighted GPA. With a GPA of 4, University of Maryland requires you to be at the top of your class.

Mid-year reports and/or first quarter grades can be submitted, though they are not considered required application materials unless they are officially requested during the decision notification process.

Grading Options and Minimum Grades

While a minimum grade of D- is required for all General Education courses, a minimum grade of C- must be earned in all courses required by the major. If a grade falls below the minimum the course must be repeated or with the advisor's permission another course may be substituted.

The grades of A, B, C, D and P are passing grades. Grades of F and U are failing grades. R and I are interim grades. Grades of W and X are final grades carrying no credit.

A D+ letter grade is equivalent to a 1.3 GPA, or Grade Point Average, on a 4.0 GPA scale, and a percentage grade of 67–69.

Common examples of grade conversion are: A+ (97–100), A (93–96), A- (90–92), B+ (87–89), B (83–86), B- (80–82), C+ (77–79), C (73–76), C- (70–72), D+ (67–69), D (65–66), D- (below 65).
